Malteser International is the international humanitarian relief agency of the Sovereign Order of Malta. We have  been working in Nigeria since 2017. In Northeast Nigeria and more specifically in Borno, Taraba and Adamawa States, MI is currently active in the WASH, Protection and FNSL sectors for saving and  improving the lives of both the IDP/refugee  populations as well as the host communities. The WASH activities focus on improved access to safe water, sanitation, and hygiene which include NFI distribution, solarization of boreholes, rehabilitation of hand pumps, construction of latrines and hygiene promotion. The protection activities focus on prevention and response to Gender Based Violence (GBV)  cases. The Food Nutrition Security and Livelihood interventions mainly focus on micro gardening, pullet rearing for egg production, composting and Nutrition (food demonstration, referrals of malnutrition cases to nutrition partners, and sensitization on nutrition. Malteser International applies a participatory, gender-sensitive and inclusive approach.

For its work in Maiduguri, Jere and Konduga, Borno State Nigeria, Malteser International is looking for an Emergency Protection Officer  – National Position.

Under the management of the Area Coordinator (Maiduguri, Jere and Konduga), in close cooperation with GBV team members, the Protection Officer will coordinate and implement protection activities in field locations. Specifically, s/he will plan, implement, monitor and document protection activities targeting MI beneficiaries, community structures and local stakeholders. 

Your responsibilities:

  • Implement assigned protection activities in line with all relevant international standards and best practices

  • Plan, implement and monitor protection individual activities as per the weekly and project workplans

  • Deliver trainings, capacity buildings and mentoring to community-based protection structures and local authorities

  • Conduct regular protection monitoring activities using MI Protection Monitoring tools and processes, follow up on specific protection issues identified to resolve and reduce risks

  • Conduct protection needs and vulnerability assessments as required

  • Ensure the provision of effective protection services and referrals to beneficiaries as required, and assist the Protection Manager in coordination with relevant partners to develop and maintain protection referral mechanisms

  • Ensure that goods, services and works, as well as Casual Labor required to complete assigned activities are requested and delivered using the appropriate HR or Procurement process, and that payments are issued and booked in accordance with the deadlines

Your profile:

  • Minimum of 2 years experience in the field of humanitarian response and refugee/IDP protection working for an international NGO, UN agency or relevant ministry or local authority

  • Technical understanding of core protection concepts (including Child protection, GBV and community-based protection), prevention and response strategies, including experience with operationalizing global best practices and international standards for implementing protection programming in humanitarian contexts

  • Experience in facilitating training and workshops on protection-related topics

  • Strong planning, organisational and problem-solving skills with the ability to work both independently and within a team

  • Integrity, strong work ethic, and ability to consistently meet deadlines under pressure

  • Strong interpersonal skills and commitment to learning and implementing organizational policies and procedures

  • Full proficiency in Microsoft Office, including Word, Excel and Outlook
