We have been working in Nigeria since 2017. In Northeast Nigeria and more specifically in Borno, Taraba and Adamawa States, MI is currently active in the WASH, Protection and FNSL sectors for saving and improving the lives of both the IDP/refugee populations as well as the host communities. The WASH activities focus on improved access to safe water, sanitation, and hygiene which include NFI distribution, solarization of boreholes, rehabilitation of hand pumps, construction of latrines and hygiene promotion. The protection activities focus on prevention and response to Gender Based Violence (GBV) cases. The Food Nutrition Security and Livelihood interventions mainly focus on micro gardening, pullet rearing for egg production, composting and Nutrition (food demonstration, referrals of malnutrition cases to nutrition partners, and sensitization on nutrition). Malteser International applies a participatory, gender-sensitive and inclusive approach.
For its work in Maiduguri, Jere and Konduga, Borno State Nigeria, Malteser International is looking for an Emergency WASH Officer – National Position.
Under the management of the Area Coordinator (Maiduguri, Jere and Konduga), the incumbent of this position will represent Malteser International values and principles in interaction with staff and external audiences for the response to floods in Maiduguri. The post holder will be responsible for overall community mobilization and engagement, timely planning, coordination, implementation, monitoring and review of the project. S/He oversees the Emergency Water, Sanitation and Hygiene (WASH) components of the South Sudan Joint Response Emergency Project – Phase 3 (SSJR 3) for its successful implementation according to approved donor and government agreements.
Your responsibilities:
- Plan the weekly activities for his/her team under the coordination of the line Manager
- Anticipate administrative and Logistics issues (requests and communicate in advance)
- Ensure the implementation of the Emergency Water, Sanitation and Hygiene (WASH) component of the project according to the approved donor and government agreements
- Encourage the community participation in the project
- Facilitate trainings and promotional activities towards improving the hygiene and sanitation practices of the local experts and communities
- Ensure the integration of WASH activities with other for greater advantage of the beneficiaries
- Develop and regularly update a detailed project work plan guiding the project implementation and ensure this is used by the project team to monitor project progress towards completion of the WASH component of the project
Your profile:
- At least 2 years relevant project management experience in emergencies, or WASH-related projects in international NGOs or similar organisations, including experience in CCM setting is well appreciated
- Understanding of and experience in the project implementation techniques, participatory planning, implementation and monitoring basic practices, including experience in assessment, design, bill of quantity preparation and hygiene promotion tools in WASH
- Proven skills in managing changes, achieving results, ensuring quality, team building and capacity building
- Excellent interpersonal skills, including cultural sensitivity, assertiveness and negotiating skills as well as ability to team work in remote rural areas and under pressure
- Prepare terms of reference and contractual agreements with contractors, including experience in developing and monitoring budgets
- An understanding of child rights and their protection and fulfilment in the development context
- Spoken and written fluency in English and computer literacy (MS Office, etc.)
