Malteser International has been working in Nigeria since 2017. In Northeast Nigeria and more specifically in Borno State, MI is currently active in the WASH sector for improving the lives of both the IDP population as well as the host communities. The WASH activities focus on improved access to safe water, sanitation and hygiene. They include NFI distribution, solarization of boreholes, rehabilitation of hand pumps, construction of latrines and hygiene promotion. Malteser International thereby applies a participatory, gender sensitive and inclusive approach ,food nutrition,security and livelihood.
For its work in Benue State, Nigeria, Malteser International is looking for a motivated Wash Officer – National Position.
As the WASH Officer, you will be responsible for ensuring the effective planning, coordination, and implementation of WASH activities in deep-field locations. This includes supervising contractors, providing technical guidance, and ensuring all interventions meet Malteser International technical standards, donor requirements, and humanitarian principles. You will prepare and submit regular activity, procurement, financial, and movement plans, while ensuring timely clearance of advances and proper coordination with logistics, finance, and security departments.
Your responsibilities:
- Ensure the effective planning, coordination, and implementation of WASH activities in assigned deep-field locations in line with project objectives and timelines.
- Prepare and submit monthly activity plans, staff movement plans, procurement requests, financial requests, and advance clearances in coordination with relevant departments.
- Supervise contractors and monitor the quality of water and sanitation infrastructure works to ensure compliance with Malteser International technical standards, while ensuring WASH activities comply with donor requirements, organizational policies, and humanitarian standards.
- Facilitate community engagement by establishing and training Water User Committees and supporting hygiene promotion and other sanitation-related activities.
- Monitor security conditions, humanitarian needs, and operational risks in the field, and provide timely updates to management and relevant departments.
- Support project monitoring, reporting, data collection, documentation, and coordination with MEAL, partners, and the country office to ensure effective project delivery.
- Represent Malteser International professionally, uphold organizational policies including Code of Conduct and PSEAH, and perform additional duties as assigned by the supervisor.
Your profile:
- Minimum academic qualification of B.Engr. in Civil and Water, Infrastructure or related Engineering courses.
- Experience in WASH emergency programming with strong focus on community mobilization and familiarity with Sphere and WASH Cluster standards.
- Experience in conducting hygiene promotion, training, NFI distribution, planning, and reporting.
- Knowledge of behaviour change approaches and community engagement methodologies.
- Strong understanding of gender, protection, and inclusion in humanitarian work.
- Strong written and spoken English required or local language skills are an asset.
- Qualified candidates currently based in Benue State will be an added advantage .

- Duty Station: Benue State Nigeria
- Duration of contract: December 2026 with possibility of extension.
