Malteser International has been working in Nigeria since 2017. In Northeast Nigeria and more specifically in Borno, Taraba and Adamawa States, MI is currently active in the WASH, Protection and FNSL sectors for saving and improving the lives of both the IDP/refugee populations as well as the host communities. The WASH activities focus on improved access to safe water, sanitation, and hygiene, including NFI distribution, solarization of boreholes, rehabilitation of hand pumps, construction of latrines, and hygiene promotion. The protection activities focus on prevention and response to Gender Based Violence (GBV) cases. The Food Nutrition Security and Livelihood interventions mainly focus on micro gardening, pullet rearing for egg production, composting and Nutrition (food demonstration, referrals of malnutrition cases to nutrition partners, and sensitisation on nutrition. Malteser International applies a participatory, gender-sensitive and inclusive approach.
For its work in Pulka, Nigeria, Malteser International is looking for an Area Coordinator – National Position.
As Area Cordinator, you will be responsible for providing strong leadership in the Management of the MI programme in Pulka (Gwoza LGA, Borno State). Working closely with and in support of Pulka-based staff, the Area Coordinator is responsible for ensuring that there is adequate, sustained, and consistent support to staff to plan and implement WASH, Protection (GBV = Gender Based Violence) and food security activities and address emerging needs themselves. Working closely with MI staff, the Area Coordinator will ensure strong coordination in achieving programme deliverables.
Your responsibilities:
- Oversee project monitoring plans with the Country Programme Coordinator; ensure high-quality programming, beneficiary participation, and accountability; monitor contextual changes and share analysis
- Collaborate with Country Office Technical staff to develop a detailed implementation plan aligned with project objectives; ensure smooth activity implementation with MI Senior Management
- Oversee programme budgets and ensure alignment with expenditures in collaboration with the Programme Administrator
- Manage MI project staff per agency policies; support team performance
- Ensure timely delivery of key project outputs and adherence to donor guidelines; work with the Programme Administrator to maintain compliance with MI and donor operational standards, including logistics, finance, and HR
- Track technical developments in WASH, Protection, food security, and other relevant sectors; report key issues to MI Senior Management and HQ
- Represent MI and project interests in Pulka; participate in sector meetings; strengthen relationships with NGOs, UN agencies, authorities, and beneficiaries
Your profile:
- At least 5 years with an INGO in a developing country and/or humanitarian context
- Excellent project management, partnership management, and coordination skills
- Extensive field team management experience as well as security, safety, and resource management experience
- Strong analytical and critical thinking skills, with the capacity to see the big picture and make sound judgments and decisions
- Proactive, resourceful, solutions- and results-oriented, with a genuine interest in learning
- Strong communication skillswith the ability to work with and lead project teams and partners to deliver innovative programs
- Ability to work effectively with local governments, align with MI values and standards, and cope in stressful or hostile environments, including travelling to deep field locations and conducting partner visits
What we offer:
- Start Date: February 2025
- Duty Station: Pulka, Gwoza Local Government Area, Borno State
- Duration of contract: Until December 2025 with the possibility of renewal
- Salary expectation: Salary according to qualification and experience
