Malteser International has been working in Nigeria since 2017. In Northeast Nigeria and more specifically in Borno State, MI is currently active in the WASH sector for improving the lives of both the IDP population as well as the host communities. The WASH activities focus on improved access to safe water, sanitation and hygiene. They include NFI distribution, solarization of boreholes, rehabilitation of hand pumps, construction of latrines and hygiene promotion. Malteser International thereby applies a participatory, gender sensitive and inclusive approach ,food nutrition,security and livelihood.
For its work in Benue, Nigeria, Malteser International is looking for a motivated Hygiene Promotion Assistant – National Position.
The Hygiene Promotion Assistant is responsible in the implementation of WASH (Water, Sanitation and Hygiene) interventions in Benue State through effective hygiene promotion and community engagement activities. The role will ensure proper assessment of hygiene and sanitation needs, implementation of hygiene promotion strategies, and distribution of hygiene/NFI materials in targeted communities..
Your responsibilities:
- Conduct hygiene and sanitation needs assessments and support distribution of hygiene/NFI items.
- Train and supervise hygiene promotion volunteers/incentive workers on hygiene education approaches and facilitation skills.
- Implement hygiene promotion activities in line with approved plans, including CHAST/PHAST and community sensitization campaigns.
- Ensure proper implementation of hygiene and sanitation components of WASH projects within the allocated budget and timeline meeting international standards.
- Prepare reports, maintain activity data systems, and support MEAL functions including monitoring and documentation of lessons learned.
- Coordinate with stakeholders and support field engagement, including camp visits, meetings, and logistics for hygiene/NFI kits distribution.
- Compliance with Protection from Sexual Exploitation and Abuse (PSEA) standards, ensuring safe, ethical, and accountable conduct in all interactions with beneficiaries and communities.
Your profile:
- Minimum academic qualification: Diploma in Public Health, Community Health, Environmental Health, or related relevant field, with practical field experience in WASH/hygiene promotion programs
- Experienced in conducting hygiene and sanitation needs assessments and supporting distribution of hygiene/NFI kits in community and camp settings.
- Strong experience in developing, testing, and utilizing IEC materials, as well as maintaining monitoring tools and hygiene promotion databases.
- Strong ability to coordinate field activities, engage stakeholders, support vulnerable groups, and promote gender mainstreaming.
- Strong understanding of gender, protection, and inclusion in humanitarian work.
- Strong written and spoken English required or local language skills are an asset.
- Possesses excellent communication, interpersonal, analytical, and report-writing skills.

- Duty Station: Benue State Nigeria
- Duration of contract: December 2026 with possibility of extension.
